Look at any copywriter’s website. You’ll see every writer making the same promises: high-quality writing, no missed deadlines, fair pricing, and so on. With everyone promising the same benefits, how do you find a truly exceptional writer? It’s time to look for a writer who has the three I’s: Intelligence, Independence, and Initiative.
- Intelligence: You don’t have time to explain every single detail of your business to writers. You need someone who learns quickly and starts writing as soon as possible. I immerse myself in your world to get up to speed fast. This means you spend less time educating me and more time attending to other projects competing for your time and talent.
- Independence: You need a writer who can work through obstacles on his own. You don’t need a writer who wastes your time with questions that should have been asked when the project started. When you hire me, you know you won’t have to babysit me through the entire project. Simply provide me with the necessary background information and materials, interview contacts, and answer some initial questions, and I’ll be on my way with the writing process. In most cases, you won’t have to hear from me again until I’m presenting my first draft.
- Initiative: Many writers refuse to involve themselves with any part of your project that doesn’t involve writing. While some clients prefer this arrangement (and I respect your wishes if this is your case), wouldn’t you at least like to know your writer cares about more than turning in a manuscript and collecting his check? I am a team player who cares about you and your company’s success. I’m not afraid to volunteer a fresh perspective, even if this means going beyond the call of duty.
Any writer can promise good writing and no missed deadlines. But you need more. You need a writer who goes the extra mile to make you look good. Someone who can work intelligently and independently to produce stellar results. And someone who isn’t afraid to take the initiative to offer his unique perspective and talents.
